The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is commonly known as IAS exam and includes 24 services like IPS, IFS, IRS and so on. This exam is only for the nationals, or the foreigners who have taken the nationality of our country. It is considered as the toughest exam in the country. And many people who wish to appear for the exam often gets tensed by the level of difficulty of the exam. But there is no need to be worried about when you are equipped with the right information and guidance.
There are some eligibility criteria’s set by the UPSC for appearing in the civil service exams. And all the candidates must fulfill the standard criteria.
- For the IAS, IFS & IPS, a candidate must be a citizen of India.
- For the IRS and other services, a candidate must be one of the following:
- A citizen of India
- a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
The candidate must be above 21 years and less than 32 years on the month of examination. For OBC, the upper age limit is 35 years and for SC/ST is 37 years.
It is the most crucial examination in India having 2 phase under this i.e. Preliminary and Mains (Written+Interview). The notification comes in the month of April and Prelims takes place in the month of August. The prelims result comes in September and Mains exams take place in December and the final result comes out in February/ March.
Stage 1- Preliminary Examination
This stage consists of 2 Objective type papers i.e general studies and aptitude test.
A] General Studies Paper I
General studies questions cover a host of topics ranging from current events of national and international importance, history, polity, Indian and World Geography, economic and social development, general science and ecology.
B] General Studies Paper II (Civil Services Aptitude test – CSAT)
The CSAT paper deals mainly with questions testing a candidate’s logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem-solving, basic numeracy, data interpretation, etc.
In addition, the English Language Comprehension skill section of the General Studies Paper II (CSAT) will be excluded.
(NOTE: There is a penalty for wrong answers; for every answer, one third (0.33) of the marks allotted to the question get deducted.)
Those candidates who clear the cut-offs are deemed eligible to attempt the Main Examination.
Stage 2- Mains Examination
This stage is of subjective session consists of 9 papers of conventional (essay).
- The total marks of the Main exam and Interview sum up to produce the final result.
- The written examination consists of the following papers:
- Paper A: One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution -300 Marks
- Paper B English 300 Marks
In order to be eligible for the Civil Services examination, candidates must be graduates or above.
Candidates who are about to appear for their final graduation exams are also eligible to appear for this examination.

- General category candidates: 4
- OBC category candidates = 7
- SC/ST Candidates = unlimited
