Mission Shakti 5.0: UP Pioneers Women’s Safety and Empowerment
Uttar Pradesh has once again set a benchmark in women’s welfare by launching the fifth phase of Mission Shakti on 22 September 2025, in sync with the auspicious start of Sharadiya Navratri. The 30-day campaign reinforces the state’s commitment to creating safe, dignified, and empowering environments for women and girls in both rural and urban areas.
Enhanced Policing and Visibility
Mission Shakti 5.0 marks a massive scale-up in policing, introducing higher foot patrols and activating all PRV-112 vehicles to maximize safety and visibility. Senior police officials conduct frequent field visits, joining patrols and interacting directly with the public to deter crime and reassure citizens. The women’s helpline 1090 remains fully active, ensuring every call receives prompt attention and action.
Women Police Force in Action
The campaign deploys 44,177 women police personnel—reaching across 57,000 village panchayats and 14,000 urban wards. These officers are present at public places during festivals, leading efforts to educate women about their rights and available welfare schemes. The ever-vigilant Anti-Romeo Squad is reinforced for quick action against offenders, promoting a zero-tolerance stance on harassment and gender-based crime.
Legal Support and Awareness Drives
Schools and colleges screen short films about women’s safety, gender equality, and legal rights. Pink Booths in municipal zones provide comprehensive support, including legal aid for women in jails. District-level programs encourage community participation to promote women’s welfare and dispel myths around gender roles.
Special Operations and Targeted Interventions
Mission Shakti’s impact is amplified through special operations.
- Operation Garuda targets cyber criminals.
- Operation Bachpan has rescued thousands of children.
- Operation Majnu acts against those harassing women.
- Operation Nasha Mukti addresses drug offenses.
- Operation Raksha and Operation Eagle target crimes in hotels and public places, resulting in thousands of successful arrests.
Performance Metrics and National Recognition
Uttar Pradesh leads the nation with a remarkable 98.80% case disposal rate for sexual offenses on the ITSSO portal. Previous phases saw over 3.44 lakh programs, reaching more than 2 crore women, with other states now planning to replicate pioneering measures like Helpline 1090 and Pink Booth initiatives.
Mission Shakti 5.0 showcases UP’s proactive approach to women’s safety, dignity, and empowerment, integrating policing, legal support, and community engagement. The initiative is a model for the nation, underscoring how targeted action and interdepartmental coordination can foster transformative change for women.
