Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme

Background:

  • In 2022, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme celebrated its seventh year.
  • On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, the performance of the BBBP scheme was launched (January 24th).
  • National Girl Child Day was established by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008.

Highlights of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme:

Primary Objectives:

  • Sex-selective elimination with a gender bias is avoided.
  • Ensure the survival and protection of the girl kid.
  • Ensure the education and participation of the girl child.
  • Girls’ rights are being defended.

Multi-Sectoral National Campaign:

  • The BBBP is a nationwide initiative that targets multisectoral action in 100 low-child-sex-ratio districts throughout all 50 states and territories.
  • This project was a collaboration between the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The Outcomes of the BBBP Scheme:

  • The Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) has risen 16 points from 918 in 2014-15 to 934 in 2015-16, according to data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) (2019-20).
  • SRB improved in 422 of the 640 districts covered by the BBBP from 2014-15 to 2018-2019.
  • Mau (Uttar Pradesh) went from 694 to 951 in 2014-15, Karnal (Haryana) from 758 to 898 in 2019-20, Mahendergarh (Haryana) from 791 to 919 in 2019-20, and so on.
  • ANC Registration: From 61 percent in 2014-15 to 71 percent in 2019-20, the percentage of women who register for ANC (AnteNatal Care) in the first trimester has grown.

Deliveries from Institutions:

  • The ratio of institutional delivery has increased from 87 percent in 2014-15 to 94 percent in 2019-20.
  • The GER of girls in secondary schools has improved from 77.45 in 2014-15 to 81.32 in 2018-19, according to preliminary statistics from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE).
  • Toilets for girls: The percentage of schools with functional separate toilets for girls has improved from 92.1 percent in 2014-15 to 95.1 percent in 2018-19.

Change in Attitude:

  • The BBBP programme has been successful in drawing attention to important concerns such as female infanticide, a lack of education among girls, and denial of their rights throughout their lives.
  • BetiJanmotsav is one of the most prominent celebrations in each area.

Other initiatives geared toward women:

  • To tackle the problem of trafficking, UJJAWALA is a Comprehensive Scheme for the Prevention of Trafficking and the Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration of Trafficking Victims for Commercial Sexual Exploitation.
  • Kishore Health Card: To keep track of the weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI) of adolescent girls (AGs).
  • These AG health cards are tracked by the AnganWadi centres (AWCs).
  • Program for Adolescent Girls (SAG).
  • Among other things, the Sukanya Samridhi Yojana.
