HPV Vaccine
Cervavac:
- The first quadrivalent HPV vaccination (Cervavac) was to be developed in India. It aims to safeguard women against cervical cancer.
Based on:
- The vaccine protects by producing antibodies against the L1 protein of the HPV virus and is based on VLP (virus-like particles), similar to the hepatitis B vaccination.
Importance:
- If this vaccine is approved, the government will be able to purchase enough HPV vaccines at a discounted rate to immunise the almost 50 million Indian girls aged 9 to 14 who are now on the waiting list. This will significantly speed up the eradication of cervical cancer in India and around the world.
Cervical cancer: What is it?
- The lower portion of the uterus that attaches to the vagina, or the cervix, is where the cells of cervical cancer development.
- The majority of cervical cancers are brought on by different strains of the sexually transmitted infection known as the human papillomavirus (HPV).
- The fourth most frequent cause of cancer in women worldwide is cervical cancer.
- Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in India among women between the ages of 15 and 44.
- A typical sexually transmitted infection is cervical cancer. The greatest risk factor for cervical cancer is persistent HPV infection.
- As long as it is identified early and adequately treated, cervical cancer is avoidable.
- Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer form and the second leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 44 worldwide.
- A fifth of the world’s cases of cervical cancer is in India.
- In the nation, one woman per eight minutes dies from it.
