PM Modi’s US Congress address

Present circumstances:

  • Indian Prime Minister Modi spoke to the US Congress during a recent official visit to the USA.  Throughout his remarks, he underlined a number of areas where the two countries can work together and have something in common.

The democracy of both nations contains the soul of each:

  • Democracy is one of the sacred and common values of the two nations. Over a long period of time, it has assumed numerous various shapes and organisational structures.
  • The ideal that upholds equality and decency has always been democracy. The idea is what promotes conversation and discourse.
  • Freedom of speech and thought is a product of democratic culture. India is fortunate that these principles have persisted over time. As stated in our earliest writings, “the truth is one, but the wise express it in different ways” millennia ago.
  • The US has the oldest democracy, whereas India has the largest. The history of the two nations’ relations bodes well for the advancement of democracy.
  • Together, the two countries will make sure that our world is better for both the present and the future.

India is a call to peace for all countries and a symbol of unity in diversity:

  • India celebrated its 75th year of independence last year. I underwent a fantastic trip of about 75 years of freedom after a thousand years of being subject to foreign rule in one way or another.
  • Both diversity and democracy were honoured throughout this festival. not only of its social empowerment principles but also of the Constitution. not just of our cooperative and competitive federalism, but also of our utmost unanimity and honesty.
  • In India, more than 2,500 political parties are officially acknowledged, and about 20 of these parties currently rule the nation’s various states.
  • Despite having dozens of dialects and 22 official languages, we can converse with one another. Every hundred kilometres, our cuisine is different.
  • In India, every major religion is practised and celebrated. Therefore, diversity is a natural part of life.
  • From ancient times to the present, women have made significant contributions to India’s prosperity and development.
  • Female sages composed a large number of Vedic poems. We are currently being led by women towards a better future.
  • India’s objective extends beyond merely emphasising female-friendly development. The progress is being driven by women.
  • A woman has triumphed from a modest tribal background to become our head of state. There are about 1.5 million elected women in our country who hold executive positions.
  • Women currently serve in our country’s Army, Navy, and Air Force. India has the highest percentage of female airline pilots in the world. I believe that raising a daughter benefits the entire family. Empowering women transforms the nation.
  • Indian customs are widely recognised. But the next generation is also developing it into a hub for technology. In India, inclusion is just as important to technology as creativity.
  • Today’s digital platforms maintain privacy while empowering human rights and dignity. India accounted for 46 out of every 100 real-time digital payments made globally in the previous year.

India’s climate change strategy: a message to the world:

  • India became the only member of the G20 to carry out the Paris Agreement.
  • At the Glasgow Summit, India presented Mission LiFE – Lifestyle for the Environment.
  • This is one method to turn sustainability into a true people’s movement. The same spirit is embodied by the G20’s “One Earth, One Family, One Future” theme, which we will be presiding over.

Areas of cooperation in the relationship between India and the US include:

  • The United States occupies a distinct place in the eyes of India in the world.
  • As India’s aerospace and military sectors grow, businesses in the states of Washington, Arizona, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania flourish. American companies grow, and their India-based R&D centres are successful.
  • The global economy gains from India and the US working together on semi-conductors and key minerals by creating more diverse, reliable, and resilient supply chains. In truth, we were strangers in our defensive cooperation at the turn of the century. Currently, the United States is one of our most important defence allies.
  • working together on crucial technologies
  • One consequence of globalisation is the excessive concentration of supply chains. Both nations have worked together to decentralise, democratise, and diversify supply networks.
  • Both countries have started a new plan for critical and emerging technologies because they understand that in the twenty-first century, technology will determine leadership, wealth, and security.
  • It will benefit humanity and search for global solutions to the issues of hunger, health, and climate change.

The world is being told by India that the time of war is over:

  • With the situation in the Ukraine, war has once again broken out in Europe. Since big powers are engaged, the outcomes are disastrous. Countries in the Global South have been particularly affected.
  • India has highlighted that the current period is not one of war. However, it involves diplomacy and negotiation. To stop the murder and suffering of people, we must all make our best efforts.

India wants a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region:

  • As threatening clouds of conflict and repression loom over the Indo-Pacific. The stability of the region is currently one of the India-US alliance’s top priorities.
  • Both nations see an Indo-Pacific area that is free, open, and inclusive, connected by safe waterways, ruled by international law, free of hegemony, and anchored in ASEAN centrality. It is also a region that is governed by international law.
  • A area where all countries, large and small, are at liberty and unafraid to make their own judgements, where advancement is not hindered by impossible debt burdens, and where connectivity is not utilised for tactical advantage
  • Through regional institutions, partners from the region and beyond, as well as India and the United States, work together on this project. As a result, the Quad has grown to be a powerful force for the region.

The following changes must be made:

  • As the world recovers from the pandemic, a new global order must emerge. We absolutely need care, consideration, and attention. Giving the Global South a voice is the way to go forward. The G20 ought to offer the African Union full membership for this reason.
  • It is essential to resurrect multilateralism and restructure multilateral organisations with better representation and resources. All of our international institutions of government, especially the UN, are subject to this. Our institutions must evolve to reflect how the world has changed.

Conclusion:

  • The relationship between India and the USA is currently in a new phase that will have an impact on both nations’ and the world’s futures. Together, the two nations demonstrate the significance and effectiveness of democracies.
