Hawk Air Defence Equipment

Details:

  • The Stinger missile system, a less effective and shorter-range air defence system, would be replaced by the HAWK interceptor missiles.
  • The US ordered more Stingers from Raytheon Technologies Corp. after shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles provided by the US to Ukraine earlier in the conflict prevented Russian airstrikes.

About:

  • In 1959, at the height of the Vietnam War, Homing All the Way Killer, better known as HAWK, enrolled in the US Army.
  • One of the biggest developments in the years that followed, in 1971, gave birth to the I-HAWK (or improved HAWK), which had an 85% kill probability.
  • The PATRIOT missile defence system developed by Raytheon in the 1990s served as an inspiration for the HAWK system. The use of HAWK by US forces has largely been abandoned since the turn of the century.
  • The HAWK equipment would be transferred under the Presidential Drawdown Authority of the Biden administration (PDA). In order to respond to unforeseen circumstances, PDA offers “rapid distribution of defence equipment and services from Department of Defence inventories to foreign countries and international organisations.”
  • According to PDA, military assistance may “begin coming within days or possibly hours of permission” and is not subject to Congressional approval.
  • An air defence system with a shorter range and more mobility is the Stinger missile system.

  • By supplying other nations and international organisations with defence goods and services from its stock, PDA helps the Department of Defense to react promptly to unanticipated events.
  • Military support under PDA is not subject to Congressional approval and can start as soon as a few days or even hours following clearance.
