Introduction
The launch of the Gyan Bharatam Mission and its e-learning portal at an international conference in New Delhi in September 2025 marks a transformative step in preserving and sharing India’s unparalleled knowledge heritage. This initiative demonstrates India’s commitment to using digital technology for safeguarding manuscripts, fostering research, and promoting knowledge and innovation on a global scale.
About the Gyan Bharatam Mission and Portal
The Mission, announced in the Union Budget 2025-26, is a comprehensive pan-India movement dedicated to the identification, documentation, digitisation, and preservation of millions of Indian manuscripts. The newly launched Gyan Bharatam Portal is a digital platform designed to:
- Create a National Digital Repository accessible by scholars, students, and the public,
- Use AI-powered tools for manuscript digitisation, multilingual search, translation, and annotation,
- Foster research, translation, and publication of rare and ancient Indian texts,
- Train scholars and conservators in heritage preservation,
- Enable public participation and global partnerships for knowledge sharing.
International Conference Highlights
The three-day conference, titled “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage,” brought together over 1,100 participants, including academicians, cultural practitioners, and technology innovators from India and abroad. The event served as a platform to discuss best practices in documentation, conservation, and open access to manuscripts. Exhibitions and cultural sessions also showcased India’s manuscript tradition and advances in digital conservation.
Significance and Vision
India possesses one of the world’s largest and oldest manuscript collections, spanning disciplines like science, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, literature, and spirituality. However, many texts are fragile and at risk of being lost. The Gyan Bharatam Mission ensures:
- Long-term preservation and accessibility of heritage knowledge,
- Integration of traditional wisdom into the modern education system in line with NEP 2020,
- Promotion of India’s global image as a leader in knowledge innovation,
- Cultural pride and civilisational continuity, supporting the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
Through the Mission, India bridges heritage and technology, empowering youth for the future while respecting the intellectual achievements of the past.
