Parakram Diwas: A Day to Inspire Patriotism

The Government of India has declared January 23 as Parakram Diwas to celebrate the birth of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, inspiring the nation, especially the youth, to embody the courage and resilience that he demonstrated throughout his life. The initiative is aimed at instilling the values of fortitude and patriotic fervour within the hearts of the citizens of India. This day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Netaji and motivates the youth to act with the same strength and passion in the face of challenges, just as he did during his lifetime.

The celebration of Parakram Diwas is not only a tribute to Netaji but also an opportunity to reflect on his contribution to India’s freedom struggle. His relentless pursuit of an independent India continues to resonate with the nation’s collective consciousness and serves as a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: A Visionary Leader

Born in Cuttack, present-day Odisha, on January 23, 1897, Netaji was the son of Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Dutt. From an early age, he exhibited exceptional leadership skills and a deep sense of nationalism. Netaji’s journey into politics began with his involvement in the youth wing of the Indian National Congress. His dedication, determination, and passion for the country’s freedom earned him the title of Congress President in 1938, a role he used to further the cause of Indian independence.

However, a fallout with the Congress leadership led Netaji to take a bold step in 1941, which forever changed the course of India’s freedom struggle. He left India and traveled to Germany in search of international support for India’s liberation from British rule. During his stay in Germany, Netaji established Free India Radio and gave inspirational speeches that echoed his vision of a free India. His powerful messages on the radio continue to be remembered as a symbol of his unwavering commitment to the cause of independence.

Netaji’s Ideals and Contributions

Netaji was heavily inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, especially his emphasis on self-reliance and the strength of the human spirit. A devout follower of Hinduism, Netaji believed in the unity of all religions and discarded any form of religious discrimination or bigotry. He was a visionary leader who sought to unite people from all walks of life in the fight for India’s freedom, transcending barriers of caste, creed, and religion.

His travels to Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and Imperial Japan during the Second World War were strategic efforts to seek support for the Indian independence movement. Netaji’s determination to secure India’s freedom led him to form the Indian National Army (INA), an armed force aimed at overthrowing British colonial rule. His efforts to gain international recognition for the INA made him one of the most influential leaders of India’s struggle for independence.

The Mystery of Netaji’s Demise

Despite his many contributions, the circumstances surrounding Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s demise remain shrouded in mystery. Official records suggest that he died from third-degree burns sustained during a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945. However, there have been several theories suggesting that Netaji may have faked his death and lived in secrecy to continue his work for India’s independence. The truth about his death continues to intrigue historians and patriotic Indians, keeping his legacy alive through the centuries.

Why Celebrate Parakram Diwas?

The celebration of 128th Parakram Diwas on January 23, 2025, serves as a fitting tribute to Netaji’s legacy. It is a day to remember his courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the cause of India’s freedom. The government’s initiative to celebrate this day annually highlights the importance of patriotism, sacrifice, and resilience—values that are crucial for India’s growth and unity.

By honoring Netaji’s contributions and sacrifices, the nation aims to instill a sense of national pride and encourage young minds to take inspiration from his life. Parakram Diwas is more than just a commemoration; it is a call to action for all citizens to contribute to the betterment of the nation, just as Netaji did.

As we mark the 128th Parakram Diwas in 2025, let us all reflect on the profound impact of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on India’s freedom movement. His life story is a testament to the power of determination and sacrifice in the pursuit of a noble cause. Today, as we remember this great leader, let us also pledge to carry forward his legacy of bravery, patriotism, and selfless service to the nation.

On this day, let us honor Netaji’s contributions and continue to work towards building a stronger, united India—one that embodies the values of freedom, justice, and equality, just as Netaji envisioned.
