2 – JALIANWALA BAGH MASSACRE: GS I – Topic Modern Indian History

 About:

  • Local residents in Amritsar decided to hold a meeting on that day, Baisakhi, to discuss and protest the detention of Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew, two leaders fighting for independence, as well as the implementation of the Rowlatt Act, which gave the British government the power to detain anyone without trial.
  • The crowd included men, women, and children. They gathered in a park called the Jallianwala Bagh, which was fenced on all sides save for a few minor entries, against British orders. While the mob was gathered, Brigadier-General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, who had crept up to the scene with the purpose of teaching the rabble a lesson, ordered 90 soldiers he had brought with him to open fire on them. Many people tried but failed to scale the walls in an attempt to flee. Several people jumped into the well in the park.

Outcomes:

  • General Dyer was removed of command and exiled to Britain after the carnage, receiving the moniker “The Butcher of Amritsar.”
  • Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, respectively, surrendered their British knighthoods and the Kaiser-i-Hind medal as a gesture of protest.
  • In 1922, the British repealed the heinous Rowlett Act.

3 – BIRSA MUNDA: GS I – Topic Modern Indian History

 Who exactly was he:

  • Bisra Munda was a Munda tribe tribal freedom warrior and folk hero. In the nineteenth century, he was a leading factor behind the Millenarian movement that arose in British-colonized Bihar and Jharkhand. He is also known as ‘Dharti Abba,’ or the Earth Father.
  • He was born on November 15th, 1875.

Birsait:

  • Bisra wanted to change the tribal group, so he encouraged people to give up their witchcraft beliefs and focus instead on prayer, abstinence from alcohol, faith in God, and following a code of conduct. He formed the ‘Birsait’ faith on the basis of these.

Achievements:

  • The ‘Ulgulan,’ or ‘Great Tumult,’ movement was formed by Bisra. In 1908, as a result of his campaign against exploitation and prejudice towards tribals, the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act was passed, dealing a huge blow to the British administration. The law made it illegal for tribal members to sell their land to non-tribal members.

Uprising in Munda:

  • It is one of the world’s most important tribal movements.
  • It was commanded by Birsa Munda in Ranchi’s south from 1899 to 1900.

According to the movement, the following forces contributed to the Mundas’ discontent:

  • The land policies of the British government were destroying the country’s historic land structure.
  • Hindu landowners and moneylenders were encroaching on their land.
  • Their native culture was rebuked by the missionaries.

The Importance of the Munda Rebellion:

  • It forced the colonial government to pass legislation to ensure that the tribals’ land was not easily taken over by dikus (Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908).
  • It revealed that tribal peoples can stand up against injustice and express their dissatisfaction with colonial power.
