What is IBPS SO Exam?

The IBPS SO (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Specialist Officer) exam is a highly competitive, national-level recruitment examination conducted annually by the IBPS. This exam is specifically designed to recruit officer cadre professionals for specialized technical and core operational roles (Scale-I) across participating Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in India.

Unlike general banking officers (POs), Specialist Officers utilize their specific graduation and post-graduation expertise to manage dedicated domains within the banking network.

List of Specialist Officer (SO) Posts Offered

Through the Common Recruitment Process (CRP SPL), candidates are selected for the following exact six streams based on their professional qualification fields:
    1. I.T. Officer (Scale-I)
    2. Agricultural Field Officer (Scale-I)
    3. Rajbhasha Adhikari (Scale-I)
    4. Law Officer (Scale-I)
    5. HR / Personnel Officer (Scale-I)
    6. Marketing Officer (Scale-I)

IBPS SO Selection Process & Exam Structure

The selection architecture of the IBPS SO exam is conducted online across a strict three-tier layout. Due to recent procedural enhancements, candidates are closely evaluated on both comprehensive aptitude and structural professional skill sets.

Phase 1: Preliminary Examination (Revised Structure)

The Preliminary phase serves as an online computer-based screening test. Questions are customized according to the applied post, and it now tests fundamental aptitude along with core domain knowledge right at the gateway stage.
  • For IT, Agriculture, HR, and Marketing Officer: The online paper consists of four distinct sections: English Language, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and Professional Knowledge (introduced directly into Prelims to check fundamental domain competency).
  • For Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari: The Quantitative Aptitude paper is replaced by General Awareness with Special Reference to the Banking Industry, alongside English, Reasoning, and Professional Knowledge.
  • Logistics: The total exam carries a weightage of 125 marks comprising 100 questions to be solved within a composite time of 80 minutes (with dedicated sectional timings). Candidates must clear individual sectional cut-offs to qualify for the next stage.

Phase 2: Main Examination (Comprehensive Core Paper)

Candidates shortlisted from the Prelims write the Main examination. The structure is no longer limited to objective domain testing alone, making it a highly decisive merit phase.
  • Exam Model: The updated Mains exam is a comprehensive 5-paper assessment. It tests candidates on advanced modules of English Language, Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude / General Awareness along with a heavily weighted Professional Knowledge (Objective) test.
  • Descriptive Paper Layer: A mandatory English Descriptive Paper (comprising 2 questions for Essay and Letter/Precis writing or professional translation based on the post stream) has been integrated into the Mains exam layout.
  • Evaluation Matrix: The Mains tier is evaluated for a grand total of 225 marks with an allocated total time frame of 155 minutes.

Phase 3: Common Personal Interview

Aspirants who successfully secure the minimum qualifying sectional and aggregate cut-off scores in the Online Main Examination are invited for a face-to-face Personal Interview.
  • Weightage Value: The interview round is evaluated out of a maximum of 100 marks.
  • Qualifying Threshold: Candidates must secure a minimum of 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD categories) to be considered for final allocation.
  • Final Allotment Ratio: The ultimate merit positioning and provisional bank allotment are calculated strictly using a combined weightage ratio of 80:20 based on the Mains Exam score and the Interview score respectively. Preliminary screening marks are not added to the final computation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IBPS SO (Specialist Officer) exam is a national-level recruitment examination conducted annually by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection. It is conducted to recruit officer-cadre professionals for specialized technical and operational roles (Scale-I) in participating public sector banks. The exam selects candidates for exactly six specialized streams: I.T. Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, Rajbhasha Adhikari, Law Officer, HR/Personnel Officer, and Marketing Officer.

To be eligible for IBPS SO, a candidate must be between 20 to 30 years of age (with applicable upper age relaxations for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD categories). Professionally, candidates must hold a 4-year full-time professional degree or a specialized Postgraduate degree/diploma in the respective field (e.g., B.Tech/MCA for IT, B.Sc Agriculture for AFO, LLB for Law Officer, or MBA/PGDM for Marketing and HR roles).

The online exam pattern consists of two main competitive phases. The Preliminary Exam is an online screening test carrying 125 marks (150 questions) checking English, Reasoning, and Quant/General Awareness based on the post. The Main Exam focuses heavily on Professional Knowledge; for Rajbhasha Adhikari, it includes both Objective and Descriptive sections (60 marks), while for all other five technical posts, it consists of a 60-question comprehensive objective test (60 marks).

The complete selection process follows a strict three-tier model: Phase 1 (Preliminary Online Test), Phase 2 (Main Online Examination), and Phase 3 (Personal Interview). Preliminary marks are purely qualifying. The final provisional bank allotment and merit ranking are calculated using a combined weighted score distribution ratio of 80:20 based on the Main Examination and the Personal Interview performance, respectively.

Following the 12th Bipartite Settlement, a newly recruited IBPS Specialist Officer (Scale-I) starts with a revised initial Basic Pay of ₹48,480 per month on the scale of ₹48480-₹85920. Including Dearness Allowance (DA), Special Allowance, HRA, Learning Allowance, and City Compensatory Allowance (CCA), the initial Gross Monthly Salary ranges between ₹82,000 to ₹87,000 depending on the city tier of posting, supplemented by corporate bank perks like leased accommodation and fuel reimbursements.
